Foster Feature: Indy

Indy is an older cat that came to us in August of 2024 after his senior owner passed away. He stayed with family for a week or so, and was surrendered to PAWS once all the formalities were finalized.

Indy struggled pretty much immediately upon entering our cattery. We didn’t have a foster family available to take him, so the cattery was the only place he could go. He was quiet and depressed, only softly meowing at people as they entered his suite to clean. He barely moved from his spot, but still enjoyed a good scritch here and there.

I remember when I first saw Indy in the cattery. He was very calm and quiet compared to the usual noisy kittens, but he seemed withdrawn. I didn’t know anything about him, so I wasn’t sure if he was suffering mentally or if that was just his personality. Thankfully he seemed to warm up to the cleaners pretty quickly.

After warming up to us, it became clear that Indy loves attention. He’s always chirping at us for a quick pet or scritch while we clean, and he likes to follow people around when he can. He’s definitely a quiet cat by nature, and he seems to enjoy older people versus young children.

I personally love the chirping sound he makes when he wants attention. I’ve been around hundreds of cats in my lifetime, but very few have ever made that sound around me. It’s absolutely adorable, and just one of his quirky little traits.

From what we’ve seen, Indy loves people. He’s always begging for attention from the cleaners and is always happy for a quick pet. He also seems to get along well with kittens from what the cleaners have told me. They’ll let him out to stretch his legs while the kittens play, although we do encourage meet and greets with any animals currently in your home.

Thankfully, Indy was in perfect physical health when we got him. Sometimes we get animals that require emergency veterinary care, but Indy was as physically healthy as could be! The only unhealthy thing about him was that he was (and still is) depressed. He doesn’t like the cattery setting where he only gets to see people for a few short hours. Thankfully, he’s improved a bit as we’ve worked with him.

Indy spends most of his days in his suite at the cattery, aside from when cleaners come to clean the suites and play with the cats. His typical day is pretty relaxed and boring, but Indy is well suited to a lazy lifestyle. His favorite place to lay is on top of his bed box, where he relaxes and watches the day go by.

When the cleaners come, he loves playing with mice, feathers, and ribbons that are connected to a stick. He’s grown more confident since we started playing with him, which has allowed his adventurous side to show through. He adores treats and isn’t picky about what kind he gets.

An ideal home for Indy would be a laid back home that’s quiet and calm, but with someone who wouldn’t mind giving him the attention he craves. We imagine a home with older people or empty nesters would do wonders for this reserved boy.

Indy is a senior cat at a little over eight years old, so his potential adopters would need to keep a senior cat in mind. He would require a diet designed for senior cats, and annual vet visits would be ideal to keep him healthy.

Indy is a lovebug already, and we imagine his desire for attention and affection would only grow in a home. If you love animals, and want to give them all the attention, Indy would be happy to be your new best friend.

Indy has taught us that being a senior doesn’t mean being grumpy. He’s got a whole lot of love to give to everyone he meets and he inspires us to treat all the animals and people that we interact with with the same love and dedication he shows us.
